Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) in Australia: Afterpay, Zip and credit risks
What is Buy Now Pay Later?
Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) is an interest-free instalment service — you receive goods immediately and pay in equal fortnightly instalments (typically 4 instalments over 8 weeks). No credit card is required. The main BNPL providers in Australia:
- Afterpay: 4 fortnightly payments, no interest.
- Zip Pay / Zip Money: flexible revolving credit limit.
- Humm: allows more instalments for larger purchases.
- Klarna, Laybuy: also available in Australia.
BNPL appears at checkout for thousands of Australian retailers and online stores.
Key risks to understand
1. Late fees accumulate quickly
Missing an Afterpay instalment triggers an immediate $10 late fee, plus a further $7 if the account remains overdue. If you are running multiple BNPL accounts simultaneously, fees can compound faster than you expect.
2. Spending more than planned
Because money does not visibly leave your account at the point of purchase, many BNPL users spend more than intended — a psychological effect similar to credit cards.
3. Credit file reporting from 2026
From March 2026, BNPL in Australia is regulated as a credit product under the Credit Act. Providers must conduct affordability checks and will report data to credit bureaus. Late BNPL payments will affect your credit score from this point.
4. Low initial limits
Afterpay typically caps limits at $500–$2,000 initially — suitable for clothing and small electronics, but not for significant purchases.
BNPL vs credit card comparison
| BNPL | Credit card | |
|---|---|---|
| Interest rate | None (if on time) | 15–20%/year |
| Late fees | Fixed ($10–$17) | % of balance |
| Credit file impact | From 2026 | Always |
| Initial limit | Low | Depends on credit history |
| Spending control | Low | Low |
When BNPL makes sense
BNPL is reasonable when:
- You are certain you will have the funds on each payment date and simply want to spread cash flow.
- You are buying a specific item — not using BNPL as a reason to buy more than you planned.
- You are using only one BNPL account and actively monitoring your payment schedule.
MoneySmart recommendations
ASIC and MoneySmart recommend:
- Set up automatic payments (auto-debit) to avoid late fees.
- Do not use BNPL for groceries, rent, or utilities — this is a signal that your finances are under stress.
- If you are running multiple BNPL accounts simultaneously, stop and review your budget.
