Public Transport in Australia: Opal, Myki, and go card Explained
Public transport in Australia is managed at the state level, so the card you use in Sydney is different from the one you use in Melbourne or Brisbane. Understanding each system saves time and money, especially in your first months in a new city.
How tap-on/tap-off works
All three major state systems use a similar principle: you tap your card on a reader when you board and tap again when you exit. Your fare is calculated based on the distance and time of travel. Forgetting to tap off is a common mistake — it results in a maximum default fare being charged for that leg.
Keep your card topped up before travel. Most systems will allow a small negative balance (a grace tap) if your card runs low mid-journey, but not reliably across all modes.
Opal card — New South Wales
The Opal card is used on trains, buses, ferries, and light rail across the Sydney metropolitan area and on some regional rail services. You can register your card online at opal.com.au, which lets you reload it remotely and replace it if lost.
Key features include a daily travel cap (once you reach a set number of trips in a week, further travel is capped at a lower rate), an off-peak discount on trains, and free travel on Sundays up to a spending cap. Contactless bank cards and phones with the Opal app can also be used on most readers.
Myki card — Victoria
Myki is used on trains, trams, and buses across Melbourne and most of regional Victoria. You load money (Myki Money) or buy a Myki Pass for regular commuters. Trams in the Melbourne CBD do not require tapping — travel in the Free Tram Zone is free without a card, but you do need to tap on trams that leave the zone.
Register your Myki online at ptv.vic.gov.au to protect your balance. Myki can take a few seconds to process, so hold it firmly against the reader.
go card — Queensland
The go card is used on TransLink services in south-east Queensland including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast. Top it up at station vending machines, retailers, or online. Off-peak discounts apply outside weekday peak hours. A minimum balance is required to tap on — keep it above a few dollars to avoid issues.
Tips for newcomers
- Always tap off — failing to do so means you are charged the maximum fare.
- Register your card online so it can be replaced if lost or stolen.
- Download the relevant app (Opal, PTV, or TransLink) for real-time timetables and account management.
- Check whether your employer offers pre-tax commuter benefits or salary packaging for public transport costs.
Each system has concession fares for eligible holders including students and certain visa holders on social security. Check the relevant authority’s website for current eligibility criteria.
