Losing your job while on a visa 482 is a stressful situation, but it does not mean you have to leave Australia immediately. There is a period to arrange your next step, and there are several options. Understanding them helps you act calmly rather than panic.
How much time you have
When you stop working with your sponsor, you have a period to arrange your next step. The current reference level is 180 days, which has been extended compared with before. This period is for you to find a direction, not to wait passively — so use it early.
The three main options
There are usually three directions: find a new sponsor to be re-nominated; move to a different visa type that you are eligible for; or leave Australia before the time runs out. Which one suits you depends on your skills, your circumstances and your long-term goals.
The effect on your pathway to PR
One point that is easy to overlook: a gap in employment can affect how time is counted for your later pathway to permanent residence (for example the TRT stream of visa 186). So decisions in this period address not just the present but also the longer road ahead.
