Student Visa to Bridging Visa: Is It Automatic?

The most common question international students ask

“After I graduate, my student visa will expire. Will I automatically get a BVA?” — This is a question that tens of thousands of international students in Australia ask each year.

The answer depends entirely on when you lodge your new visa application relative to the expiry date of your student visa.

The most important principle: timing

This is the core rule of Australia’s bridging visa system:

Lodge your new visa application BEFORE the student visa expires → a BVA activates automatically

Lodge your new visa application AFTER the student visa expires → you become an unlawful non-citizen immediately

There is no grace period. The moment your student visa expires without an application under consideration, you are an unlawful non-citizen.

How does a BVA activate automatically?

When you lodge a new visa application (any type of visa — a graduate visa, partner visa, skilled visa, and so on) while your student visa is still in effect:

1. The DHA system records your application
2. Your student visa continues in effect until the expiry date shown on the visa
3. When the student visa expires, the BVA activates automatically — you do not need to do anything further, and you do not need to lodge a separate application for the BVA
4. The BVA continues until your new visa application is decided

This is called a “Bridging Visa A (Automatic)” — a bridging visa that does not require a separate application.

Work rights on a BVA after a student visa

This is the second important point students need to know. Work rights on a BVA after a student visa depend on the visa you are applying for:

If you are applying for a Graduate visa (subclass 485): The BVA generally allows you to work (or with limits similar to the student visa) while you wait for a decision. However, check the specific conditions on VEVO.

If you are applying for a Skilled visa (for example 189, 190, 491): The BVA generally allows you to work. The specific rules depend on the visa you are applying for.

If you are applying for a Partner visa (820/801): The BVA generally allows you to work, although in some cases there may be an initial restriction until an interview or the first stage of assessment.

A note on the student visa work limit: While holding a student visa, international students are generally limited to 48 hours of work per fortnight (during study periods), or unlimited during breaks. When you move onto a BVA, this 48-hour limit no longer applies — the BVA’s work rights differ from those of a student visa. Check the specific conditions on VEVO once the BVA activates.

Dangerous situations to avoid

Situation 1 — Forgetting to track your student visa expiry: Many students focus on graduating and applying for jobs and forget their visa expiry date. The result: the visa expires with no application lodged → unlawful non-citizen.

Situation 2 — Lodging an application but DHA does not accept it: Sometimes a visa application has an error and is returned by DHA. If this happens after the student visa has expired, you will not have a BVA because your application was never validly lodged.

Situation 3 — Assuming a graduate visa is automatic: The Graduate visa (subclass 485) is not automatically granted to all graduates. You must actively lodge an application and meet the requirements. Having graduated is not enough — you need to lodge before your student visa expires.

Situation 4 — Leaving Australia while a BVA is in effect: After moving onto a BVA, if you leave Australia without a BVB, the BVA ceases and you cannot return. Do not book a trip to visit family without first obtaining a BVB.

A recommended timeline for graduating students

Below is a practical timeline for managing the transition from a student visa to a BVA safely:

6 months before the student visa expires:

• Identify the visa you will apply for next
• Get advice from a MARA agent if needed
• Begin preparing your documents (skills assessment, English, and so on)

3 months before the student visa expires:

• Check the exact expiry date on VEVO
• Make sure all required documents are ready

At least 1 month before the student visa expires:

• Lodge your new visa application
• Get confirmation that the application was validly lodged (with a receipt number)
• Keep this receipt number safe

When the student visa expires:

• The BVA activates automatically
• Check VEVO to confirm the BVA is in effect

Immediately after the BVA activates:

• Check the work conditions on VEVO
• Notify your current employer of your new visa status (if needed)
• Update your visa details with your bank and relevant organisations

A successful transition = early preparation

The journey from a student visa to a longer-term visa is one of the most important transitions in the life of an international student in Australia. The success of this transition depends almost entirely on early preparation and lodging on time. Nothing substitutes for being proactive and careful during this stage.
