Updating Your EOI After Lodging: Changing Points and Details

Why updating your EOI matters

An EOI (Expression of Interest) in SkillSelect is not a static document — it reflects the state of your profile at a point in time. When your circumstances change (a higher English score, more work experience, a partner completing a skills assessment), you need to update the EOI so that the points in the system accurately reflect reality.

More importantly, updating your EOI correctly lets you keep your original date of effect — preserving your place in the queue for invitation rounds.

What you can update without losing your date of effect

Most changes in an EOI can be made without affecting your original date of effect:

English score

If you have just re-sat the test and achieved a higher score (for example from IELTS 7.0 to 8.0), you can update the English result in your EOI. The system will automatically recalculate your EOI points with the new English level. The date of effect does not change.

To update, you need to enter the reference number of the new test result in ImmiAccount.

Work experience

When you reach the next year-of-experience milestone (for example from 4 years to 5 years, or from 7 years to 8 years), your experience points increase by a tier. You can update your work experience details in the EOI so the points are automatically adjusted.

Partner points

If your partner has just completed a skills assessment, you can add the partner’s skills assessment details to the EOI to gain an extra 10 points. This does not affect the date of effect.

Personal and contact details

Address, phone number, email, marital status — all can be updated without affecting your points or date of effect.

Study and additional credential points

If you have just completed a course of study in Australia (the Australian Study Requirement), completed a Professional Year, or obtained a NAATI credential, you can update the corresponding points in your EOI.

Changes that require lodging a new EOI

Not every change can be made within an existing EOI. Some situations require you to withdraw the old EOI and lodge a new one:

Changing the ANZSCO code

This is the most important case. You cannot change the ANZSCO code in an active EOI. If you want to lodge an EOI with a different ANZSCO code (for example because you have a new skills assessment for a different occupation), you must:

  1. Withdraw the current EOI (or keep it if you want to maintain it).
  2. Lodge a new EOI with the new ANZSCO code.

The new EOI will have today’s date as its date of effect — losing the entire queue-order advantage of the old EOI.

A fully expired skills assessment

If the skills assessment in your EOI has expired and you cannot update with the old assessment, you need a new skills assessment and usually have to lodge a fresh EOI.

How to update an EOI in ImmiAccount

The process for updating an EOI:

  1. Log in to ImmiAccount.
  2. Go to the SkillSelect section and select your current EOI.
  3. Choose Edit or the corresponding option to change the details.
  4. Make the changes and save.
  5. The system automatically recalculates the points based on the new details.

After updating, the original date of effect is retained and the new points apply in the following invitation rounds.

Best practice

  • Update immediately when your points change — do not leave a lower-than-actual score sitting in the system.
  • Review periodically (at least every 3 months) to ensure all details remain accurate and up to date.
  • Keep evidence of all updates — take a screenshot after each important change.
  • Check the validity of your skills assessment and English results — both have expiry dates and need to be renewed before they lapse so your EOI remains valid.
