AASW Skills Assessment for Social Workers: Documents, Criteria and Migration
AASW — the sole assessing authority for social workers
AASW (Australian Association of Social Workers) is the only body appointed by the Department of Home Affairs to carry out skills assessments for social workers (Social Worker, ANZSCO 272511 and related codes). Unlike some other occupations that have an alternative choice of authority, social workers must go through AASW.
The process is called the Assessment of Comparability (AoC) — it evaluates whether your social work qualification is comparable to the Australian standard, qualifies you to join AASW as a member, and is recognised for migration purposes.
Prerequisites
AASW will only consider an application if you meet all of the following conditions:
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Social Work (B.SW.) or equivalent — a four-year degree; or
- A Master of Social Work undertaken after a bachelor degree in a related field
A degree in Sociology, Psychology or Social Education is not comparable to Social Work under AASW’s definition. Check the title of your qualification and the content of the program before applying.
Field Education: Your training program must include supervised clinical practice (field placement/practicum). AASW requires a minimum number of placement hours — this is a point that training programs in some countries frequently fall short on.

The Assessment of Comparability process
Step 1 — Apply online through the AASW website. Complete all of the academic and professional information requested.
Step 2 — Documents to submit:
- Your Social Work qualification (certified copy)
- A detailed academic transcript with course descriptions for each subject
- Field placement records — hours, placement organisation, supervisor details
- A professional CV — work experience in the social work field
- A valid English test result
- Passport
- Certified English translations of all documents not in English
Step 3 — AASW reviews and issues an outcome:
- Comparable: Your qualification is recognised as comparable to the Australian standard → eligible to join AASW and usable for your visa
- Comparable with conditions: Comparable subject to conditions — this usually requires further study or additional placement hours
- Not comparable: Not eligible — AASW states the specific reasons
AoC fees and processing times: check the AASW website for current figures.
English
AASW requires proof of English language ability as part of the application:
- IELTS Academic: an overall 7.0 with no band below 7.0 (in some cases AASW requires higher writing and speaking bands)
- OET is also accepted at equivalent criteria
AASW may waive the English requirement for applicants who graduated from a program taught entirely in English in certain recognised countries — check the AASW website.
Practical notes
Overseas training programs: Many social work programs are four-year bachelor degrees. Common issues are:
- Insufficient field placement hours
- A curriculum weighted towards theory and administration, with little clinical practice component
- Subject titles that are hard to map to the Australian standard
If you suspect your program does not have enough field education, it is worth contacting AASW to ask before lodging a formal application (to avoid losing the fee).
AASW membership: Once your AoC is approved, you can join AASW as a member. AASW membership is not a practising licence — social workers in Australia (unlike nurses or pharmacists) are not generally required to hold a state licence to work (except in some states with their own “protected title” rules). However, many employers require AASW membership.
Do not confuse this with VETASSESS: Some applicants approach VETASSESS for the social worker occupation — this is a mistake. AASW is the only authority appointed for the ANZSCO social worker group.
Migration visa relevance
A “Comparable” outcome from AASW is the skills assessment for a migration visa. Social workers (ANZSCO 272511) may apply for:
- Visa 190/491: If a state or territory nominates the occupation on its list
- Visa 482: If you have a sponsoring employer that is an approved social, non-profit, health or education organisation
