Accountant Without an Accounting Degree: RPL Assessment Pathways
Can an accountant without an accounting degree migrate to Australia?
Yes — but the path is harder and requires considerably more experience. All three assessing bodies (CPA Australia, CA ANZ and IPA) have a mechanism for assessing applicants without a formal accounting degree, usually through RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) or an experience-based assessment pathway.
The key point: lacking an accounting degree does not mean automatic rejection — the question is whether you have enough experience and documentation to prove your competence.
What is the RPL pathway?
RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) is a process of assessing competence based on actual work experience rather than academic qualifications. In the context of accounting migration, RPL allows the assessing body to recognise that you have accumulated accounting knowledge and skills equivalent to a degree through long-term work experience.
RPL does not mean you have nothing to prove — in fact the opposite is true: an RPL application requires far more detail and specificity than a standard one.
Which body is best suited for accounting RPL?
IPA (Institute of Public Accountants)
IPA is often seen as the most flexible RPL pathway of the three bodies:
Experience requirement: IPA may assess applicants without an accounting degree if they have relevant work experience meeting accounting-work requirements at an appropriate level. The experience must be in core accounting functions — basic bookkeeping or simple AP/AR work is not enough.
Documentation required: A detailed description of each role, scope of responsibilities, the type of financial reports prepared, the accounting software used, and the size of the organisation. IPA assesses whether the experience is “equivalent” to an accounting degree.
CPA Australia
CPA Australia has stricter academic requirements. However, CPA may assess applicants with a degree in another field (economics, business administration) if that degree includes enough core accounting units — typically around 8–10 units in financial accounting, auditing, tax and management accounting.
For someone without any degree: CPA is less flexible than IPA for experience-only RPL.
CA ANZ
CA ANZ requires the highest level of qualification of the three bodies. An experience-only RPL pathway is uncommon with CA ANZ. It is a better fit if you hold a degree (even if not in accounting) with a sufficient number of accounting units.
Common applicant scenarios
Scenario 1 — A finance, banking or economics degree: Many applicants hold a degree in Finance and Banking, Business Administration or Economics — not formal accounting. CPA and CA ANZ may assess them if the program includes enough accounting units. You will need to submit full transcripts plus course descriptions so the assessing body can evaluate each unit.
Scenario 2 — A degree in an entirely different field plus long accounting experience: For example, an engineer or lawyer who moved into accounting for many years. IPA RPL is the best option, with a minimum requirement of around 5–7 years of experience and a detailed job-description file.
Scenario 3 — No university degree: Having no university degree creates major difficulties with all three bodies. IPA may assess you if the experience is exceptionally long (10+ years) and rich. However, the safer path is to consider completing an accounting qualification (including by distance learning) to meet the formal requirement before lodging an assessment.
Documents needed for an RPL application
An accounting RPL application generally includes:
- Any qualification you already hold (even if not accounting) plus transcripts and course descriptions for each unit
- Employer confirmation letters for each accounting role — these must describe specifically: the type of financial reports prepared, the accounting standards applied, the software used, and the size of the business
- A self-described list of skills and knowledge in the IPA/CPA format — similar to the “CDP” used by Engineers Australia, but less structured
- A detailed CV in an accounting format: each role, specific duties, and timeframes
How long does it take and what does it cost?
RPL usually takes longer to process than a standard application — an extra 4–8 weeks compared with a standard qualification assessment. The RPL assessment fee is usually comparable to, or slightly higher than, the standard fee — check each body’s website for the current fee.
When to study further instead of using RPL
RPL suits you when you have long, deep experience. But if your accounting experience is not yet sufficient (under 5 years), or your role has been mainly financial administration rather than in-depth accounting, then completing an accounting qualification will be both faster and more certain. Some Australian universities offer online or hybrid programs suitable for people who are working.
