Applying for the Visa 482 From Outside Australia

The visa 482 can be lodged from anywhere in the world — you do not need to be in Australia when you apply. This is a significant advantage over some other visa types and lets you plan your move before leaving your home country.

What an offshore application is

An “offshore application” means you lodge the visa 482 application while you are outside Australia. By contrast, an “onshore application” is lodged while you are in Australia.

Both are valid for the visa 482. The Department of Home Affairs does not prioritise one over the other.

Specific conditions for an offshore application

All requirements for qualifications, English, experience, health and character apply equally regardless of where you are when you lodge.

One important difference: you must be outside Australia at the time the visa is granted — or in Australia at the time the visa is granted — both are possible, depending on when you travel. The Department requires you to meet the conditions at the time it makes its decision, not necessarily at the time you lodge.

The offshore process: the employer still lodges the nomination

The three-stage process does not change when you apply offshore:

1. The employer lodges the SBS (if it does not already hold one)
2. The employer lodges the nomination
3. You lodge the visa application from overseas

You can prepare and lodge your personal application through the ImmiAccount online system — you do not need to be present in Australia or at a consular office.

Offshore health examinations

The health examination must be carried out by a doctor designated by the Department (a Panel Physician). Many countries have Department-designated clinics in major cities.

A timing note: the Department issues a Health Assessment Panel (HAP) ID when you lodge. You then book your examination. Results are usually valid for 12 months — so have the examination close to the time you lodge, not too early.

Police clearance from your home country

You need character documents from every country where you have lived 12 months or more in the past 10 years. From your home country, this is the relevant police or judicial-record certificate issued by the competent authority.

Allow time, as the document may need certified translation into English before you lodge.

When to travel to Australia

Once the visa is granted, it allows you to enter Australia within a set period (usually shown as a “must arrive before” date). You will receive notification by email from the Department when the visa is granted.

The visa 482 allows multiple entry — you can come and go from Australia many times throughout the visa’s validity.

Offshore versus onshore — which to choose

If you are overseas with a job offer in Australia: simply lodge offshore — this is the standard process for many applicants. There is no special reason to enter Australia on another visa first and then lodge the 482.

If you are already in Australia on another visa (student, visitor, working holiday): lodging onshore is often more convenient because you are already there.
