Travel and Re-Entry Rights on the Visa 482
The visa 482 lets you leave and re-enter Australia freely throughout the visa’s validity — it is a multiple-entry visa. You do not need permission before travelling. There are, however, a few points to understand so you do not run into problems.
Multiple entry: you can come and go many times
The visa 482 has a multiple-entry condition — you can:
- Leave Australia for overseas
- Return to Australia
- Repeat this as many times as you like
…throughout the validity of the visa.
You do not need a “re-entry visa” or any special permit before you travel.
Check your visa is valid before you travel
This is something many people overlook. Before you buy a ticket home, check:
- How long the visa 482 remains valid
- The “must arrive before” (MAB) date, if there is one
- That you are not in a Bridging Visa situation
If you are on a Bridging Visa A and leave Australia after the original visa 482 has expired, the BVA will cease and you cannot return.
Check on VEVO
Use VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) at vevo.homeaffairs.gov.au to see your current visa status, conditions, and expiry date.
You can also show VEVO to an employer or bank to confirm your work rights and visa status.
While a new 482 is in progress
If a new 482 nomination has been lodged but not yet approved, and you are using a bridging visa or an old visa 482 that is about to expire: you cannot travel unless you hold a BVB (Bridging Visa B).
Work while overseas
Condition 8107 requires you to work for the correct employer. Working remotely while in your home country for a short period usually does not create a problem — but there is no clear official guidance on this point.
If you expect to work remotely for an extended period (several weeks or more), consult your employer and, if necessary, seek advice from a migration agent.
When the visa 482 expires while you are outside Australia
If the visa 482 expires while you are overseas: you will not be able to return to Australia on that visa. You will need a new visa (or a new nomination beforehand) to return.
If a new nomination has been approved and you are waiting for the visa to be granted: you must wait for the new visa to be granted before entering — you cannot enter on an expired visa.
Family travelling with you
Dependants (a spouse or children) holding a dependent visa 482 also have similar multiple-entry rights. Check each person’s visa on VEVO before you travel.
