When does the DHA request a repeat examination after grant?

In most cases, the visa health requirement is assessed once during the processing of an application and is not reconsidered after the visa has been granted. However, there are some exceptional situations in which the DHA may require the visa holder to undergo a new or additional health examination after the visa has been granted.

Understanding these situations helps visa holders avoid surprises and be ready if a request arises.

Situation 1: results expire before entry

This is the most common situation leading to a request for a repeat examination. Visa health examination results are usually valid for 12 months from the date of examination. If a visa is granted but you have not yet entered Australia and your health results expire while you wait, the DHA may:

• Require you to undergo a new examination before your first entry, or
• Place a condition on the visa requiring a repeat examination within a set time after entry

This situation often arises with permanent visas that have long processing times or where the visa holder delays entry after the visa is granted.

Situation 2: health undertaking and periodic medical monitoring

If a visa is granted with a health undertaking, the visa holder usually has an obligation to register with a state health authority and undergo periodic assessment or monitoring. This is not strictly a “visa health re-examination” in the sense of a DHA request, but in substance it is a mechanism for continued medical monitoring after grant.

The results of this monitoring may be reported back to the DHA if a serious problem is found or the visa holder does not comply.

Situation 3: new health information emerges

In some rare cases, the DHA may receive information about a visa holder’s new health condition after grant — for example from an Australian health authority, from a hospital on admission, or from the Medicare system. If this information indicates a serious health problem not previously assessed, the DHA has the power to request further assessment.

This is particularly relevant for:

• Active tuberculosis detected after entry
• A serious mental health condition affecting public safety
• A dangerous infectious disease

Situation 4: a permanent application after a long-term temporary visa

When you lodge a permanent application after holding a temporary visa for a long time, the health examination results from the original temporary application may have expired. In this case, the DHA will require a new health examination for the permanent application — this is part of the new application process, not a re-examination for the old visa.

A typical example: a holder of a temporary 482 (skilled) visa who, after 3-4 years, lodges a permanent 186 application will almost certainly need a new health examination because the old results expired long ago.

Situation 5: a multiple-entry visa with a long gap

For a temporary visa that allows multiple entries and has a long validity (for example: a 10-year tourist visa or a long-term business visa), the DHA usually does not require a repeat examination after grant. But if you do not use the visa for a long time and then want to enter for the first time when the original examination results have expired, the DHA may require new health confirmation.

The process if you receive a re-examination request

If the DHA sends a request for a repeat health examination after the visa has been granted:

1. Check the response deadline — the DHA usually sets a specific deadline. Failing to respond on time can lead to consideration of cancellation.
2. Contact a DHA-recognised Panel Physician to book the examination as required.
3. Keep the same HAP ID if possible — in some cases, the DHA can link the new request to the old record so the Panel Physician understands the context.
4. Consult a migration agent if you are unsure of the reason for the DHA’s request or the specific process that applies.

Practical advice

The simplest way to avoid surprise re-examination requests is to enter Australia before your examination results expire if this is a permanent visa or a temporary visa requiring entry within a set period. For a multiple-entry temporary visa, check the visa conditions carefully and track the validity of your examination results if this was a factor mentioned in the visa grant decision.
