Education agent vs migration agent: who you need, and when
Two kinds of agent, two different purposes
When people talk about a “study agent”, they often mean two entirely different kinds of professional that are easily confused or lumped together:
Education Agent: A person or organisation that refers students to institutions in Australia (or other countries). They receive a commission from the institution — not from you. The service is usually free for students.
Migration Agent (MARA-registered): A professional registered with MARA to advise on and handle visa applications. They charge a fee to you. They are legally responsible for the quality of their advice.
This is a fundamental difference in the structure of incentives — and the reason you cannot use one to replace the other.
Education agent — role and limits
An education agent is good at:
- Recommending and advising on institutions against the criteria you set
- Helping you lodge an admission application and tracking its progress with the institution
- Knowing the entry requirements, fees and conditions of many institutions
- Helping with logistics: accommodation, orientation, initial paperwork
An education agent is NOT good at (and should not be asked about):
- PR strategy — they are not trained for it and bear no legal responsibility for it
- Complex visa advice — including a subclass 500 visa with special factors (a complex GTE, a refusal history)
- Assessing the occupation list and EOI points — the domain of migration law
The real risk: An education agent has an incentive to enrol students in institutions that pay a high commission. A lower-quality private institution that pays more can be recommended more often than one that is better for your PR goal. This is not always against your interests, but the incentive structure is real.
Migration agent — role and when you need one
A migration agent is good at:
- Assessing the whole journey from where you are now to PR
- Advising on field and institution strategy against the occupation list and skills assessment
- Handling a subclass 500 visa with complex factors
- Supporting skills assessment, EOI, the 485 visa, and the 189/190/491 visas
- Representing you in an AAT appeal if needed
A migration agent is NOT:
- The person who advises on the best institution (that is the education agent)
- Someone who does everything — you still need to actively understand and track your own journey
Who do you need, and when?
Before choosing an institution and field (most important)
Ask a migration agent if your goal is PR. This is when you decide on the field, the assessing authority and the state — a migration agent understands this.
Once you have a direction for the field and the type of institution, an education agent can help find specific institutions within that scope.
When preparing a subclass 500 visa application
For most ordinary subclass 500 visas, an education agent is usually enough support. But if you have a visa refusal history, health issues, or a complex GTE — you need a migration agent.
While studying and during the 485 stage
A migration agent is the person to consult when:
- Preparing a skills assessment
- Building an EOI strategy
- Considering state nomination
- You have any visa issue
Family visas (if you want to bring a partner over)
A migration agent — not an education agent.
Some people use both
Many people use an education agent to choose an institution and handle admission (free), while paying a migration agent for a PR strategy consultation before deciding on a field and institution.
The cost of a single consultation with a migration agent (usually 1-2 hours) is generally very small compared with the cost of the whole 5-8 year journey. It is a worthwhile investment to make sure you start out heading the right way.
Check before you trust anyone
Education agent: There is no mandatory national registration system in Australia (unlike for a migration agent). Ask: how long have they worked as an agent? Do they have experience with the institution and field you are interested in?
Migration agent: Must hold a current MARN and MARA registration. Check at mara.gov.au before using their service — no exceptions.
