CDR for Mechanical Engineers: Writing the Report for Engineers Australia
What is a CDR and why does it matter?
The CDR (Competency Demonstration Report) is the central document in an Engineers Australia (EA) skills assessment. Unlike ACS or TRA — where the application is mostly employment references and transcripts — EA requires you to write a long report demonstrating your engineering competency against specific criteria.
A CDR for a mechanical engineer (ANZSCO 233512) has three main parts:
- Continuing Professional Development (CPD) — ongoing professional study and development
- Career Episodes (3 accounts) — describing 3 projects/stages in your career in detail
- Summary Statement — mapping each part of your career episodes to EA’s competency elements

Career Episode structure
Each Career Episode is typically 1,000–2,500 words and must answer the question: what did you personally contribute, technically, in a specific engineering situation?
Standard structure:
- Introduction: what you were doing, for whom, over what period
- Engineering background: what the project was, what the engineering challenge was
- Your engineering work: what you specifically did — analysis, calculations, design, testing, operation
- Outcomes: the results achieved
The most important principle: Write in the first person (I did, I designed, I calculated, I analysed) and focus on what YOU did, not what the team or the project did. EA assesses you as an individual, not the company you worked for.
Career Episodes suited to mechanical engineers
Internationally trained mechanical engineers often have varied experience. Project and work types well suited to a Career Episode include:
Mechanical design and structural analysis:
- Designing machinery, production equipment, drive systems
- Stress, deformation and fatigue analysis (FEA/FEM)
- Material selection and load determination
Thermal and fluids:
- Designing heat-exchange systems and air conditioning
- Flow analysis, piping and valve systems
- Optimising thermal performance
Manufacturing and fabrication:
- Setting up production processes, selecting machining methods
- Quality control, supervising production to engineering standards
Maintenance and operations:
- Root cause analysis of failures
- Scheduling preventive maintenance, optimising equipment operation
Engineering project management:
- Coordinating contractors, supervising construction to specifications
- Engineering planning, managing engineering risk
Competency elements EA requires
EA requires you to demonstrate competency across three main groups:
PE1 — Engineering Knowledge and Skills: Core engineering knowledge — physics, mechanics, thermodynamics, theory applied to real work. This is the part internationally trained mechanical engineers tend to do well if they have done hands-on engineering work.
PE2 — Engineering Application Ability: The ability to apply engineering knowledge to solve real problems — analysing situations, designing solutions, making engineering decisions.
PE3 — Professional and Personal Attributes: Technical communication, teamwork, professional ethics, and awareness of safety and environmental impact.
Your Summary Statement needs to map each specific paragraph in your career episodes to each sub-element of PE1, PE2 and PE3.
CPD — Continuing Professional Development
The CPD section lists professional learning activities over the most recent few years, including:
- Training courses, workshops, seminars
- Technical certifications (if any): AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ANSYS, etc.
- Reading technical literature and journal articles
- Professional body membership
The CPD does not need to be long — 1–2 pages listed in enough detail is appropriate. Its purpose is to show that you continue to develop professionally.
Common mistakes in a mechanical engineer’s CDR
Mistake 1: Describing the project instead of your individual contribution “This project involved designing a system…” is not a good CDR. You need to write: “I analysed the loads and designed the connecting flange based on…”
Mistake 2: Career Episodes too short or too long Too short (under 500 words) = lacking engineering detail. Too long (over 3,000 words) = EA may find it insufficiently focused. Aim for 1,000–2,500 words per episode.
Mistake 3: The three Career Episodes are too similar EA wants to see variety: at least 2 of the 3 episodes should come from different projects/stages, ideally demonstrating different areas of mechanical engineering.
Mistake 4: A thin Summary Statement Many people write good career episodes but a Summary Statement that only cites paragraph numbers without explaining why that paragraph demonstrates the competency. You need to be specific: “Paragraph CE1.2 demonstrates PE1.4 because I applied mechanics of materials to…”
Mistake 5: Not demonstrating safety and environmental factors EA places weight on safety and sustainability. In at least one career episode, mention how you considered and addressed safety factors.
Documents other than the CDR
In addition to the CDR, EA requires:
- Your engineering qualification (NAATI translation)
- Your university transcript (NAATI translation)
- Passport
- A technical CV/resume
EA does not require employment reference letters (unlike ACS) — but it may request additional documents if the CDR needs clarification.
