Structural engineer CDR: overview
Structural Engineer (ANZSCO 233214) belongs to the group of engineers assessed by Engineers Australia (EA). The CDR process and structure are the same as for other engineering disciplines — but the content of the career episodes needs to reflect the specifics of structural engineering: load analysis, structural design (concrete, steel, timber), technical standards, and structural safety.

Career episodes suited to structural engineers
Structural engineers commonly work in the following fields: residential buildings, commercial buildings, bridges and roads, and industrial structures. Project types suitable for a career episode include:
Reinforced concrete structural design:
- Foundation design (isolated footings, strip footings, raft foundations, bored piles)
- Design of reinforced concrete beams, columns, slabs and walls
- Calculation to a standard (TCVN, ACI, Eurocode — whichever standard you used)
Steel structural design:
- Design of steel frames for industrial buildings
- Design of bolted and welded connections
- Checking local and overall stability
Structural analysis:
- Modelling and analysis using software (ETABS, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, etc.)
- Checking wind loads, seismic loads and imposed loads
- Comparing linear and non-linear analysis
Structural construction supervision:
- Supervising foundation works and concrete pours
- Checking slump and testing concrete samples
- Resolving technical issues arising on site
Points structural engineers often overlook
1. Design standards are necessary but not everything
EA does not require you to have applied Australian standards (AS/NZS) while working overseas. What matters is that you demonstrate the engineering process: from determining loads → structural analysis → design → checking → documentation. If you used Vietnamese standards (TCVN) or American standards (ACI/AISC), name the standard — this shows you worked to a code rather than simply “by experience”.
2. Software is a tool, not a result
Writing “I used ETABS to model and analyse the structure” is not enough for a career episode. You need to write: “I set up a 3D model in ETABS, entered wind loads to TCVN 2737:1995, ran a modal analysis, and from the results I determined that… Therefore I decided to…”
3. Structural safety must appear
EA emphasises safety. In at least one career episode, you need to address specifically how you ensured structural safety: safety factors, extreme loads, conservative assumptions, and failure checks. Do not simply say “the design is safe” — you need to show what you did to ensure it.
4. Supervision experience is valid but needs technical detail
If you did more construction supervision than design, a career episode about supervision is still valid — but it needs to demonstrate your engineering judgement: “On site, I identified X. I assessed the technical risk as Y because Z. I decided to address it by…”
How to write the Summary Statement
The Summary Statement is a list mapping each sentence or paragraph in the career episodes to EA’s competency elements. This is the part most people do most carelessly.
The right approach:
- Read EA’s list of PE1, PE2, PE3 sub-elements (found in the EA Migration Skills Assessment — Competency Requirements document)
- For each sub-element, find the passage in the career episodes that demonstrates it
- Write: “CE2, paragraph 3 — In this paragraph, I describe how I analysed seismic loads to TCVN 9386:2012, applying advanced structural engineering knowledge (PE1.2)”
Avoid: Simply listing paragraph numbers without explanation.
Realistic structure: A Summary Statement is typically 5–8 pages long, mapping all sub-elements carefully.
The level of detail needed in a structural engineer CDR
Structural engineers sometimes worry that overseas projects are not “big enough” compared with Australian standards. This is not true — EA assesses your engineering competency, not the scale or standard of the project.
A career episode about designing a small residential building can still fully demonstrate structural engineering competency — provided you describe in detail your analysis process, calculations and engineering decisions.
EA timing and fees
An EA assessment generally has a standard processing time of around a few months (check the EA website for the current time). If EA needs further information, the process can take longer. EA also offers an expedited service for a higher fee.
Start preparing your CDR early — it typically takes 2–4 months to research, write, revise and finalise a good CDR.
