Who Needs a Skills Assessment for an Australian Visa

A skills assessment takes time and money, so the first reasonable question is whether your application actually needs one. The answer depends on your specific visa stream, not on a single rule that applies to every case.

Streams that usually require an assessment

Most independent and state-nominated skilled streams (such as 189, 190, 491) require a positive skills assessment before you lodge an Expression of Interest or visa application. For employer-sponsored streams, the requirement depends on the stream: the 186 Direct Entry stream usually requires an assessment, while the Temporary Residence Transition stream (from 482 up) usually places less weight on this step.

When you may not need one

Some streams and some occupation groups have exceptions or are exempt. For example, the 482-to-186 pathway via TRT relies more on the time you have worked for your sponsoring employer than on a fresh assessment. This is why it is best to confirm the right stream first, then decide whether to do a skills assessment — doing one when it is not needed is a waste.

Which occupations need an assessment

As a rule, if the occupation you nominate is on the occupation list for your visa stream, that occupation has a corresponding assessing authority. Your job is to find the correct ANZSCO occupation code and the correct authority responsible for it.

How early should you start?

Because an assessment result has a validity period and some authorities take quite a while, many people do this step early in their plans. But “early” is different for each application — doing it too early can mean the result expires before the visa is decided. Your specific case should be reviewed by a registered migration agent (MARA).
